Central america
girls in central america are particularly vulnerable to climate change.
Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador three of the most vulnerable regions in terms of climate disaster. Rising global temperatures have led to unpredictable weather patterns, which directly affects agricultural yields. Women and girls overwhelmingly bear the brunt of the the hardship faced by families when there isn’t enough food. In addition to the effects of climate change, Central Americans have suffered violence and political instability.
Mayan indigenous women in Guatemala in particular face rampant discrimination, and are far more likely to be illiterate, suffer poor health, live in extreme poverty, and be burdened with unplanned children. Education, even at the most basic level, is often out of reach for girls in Central America, which only serves to limit their opportunities and continue the cycle of poverty.

Abriendo Oportunidades
In 2013, we began the construction on a learning center for the Guatemalan village of Vásquez. Before construction of the learning center, there were no libraries in the village, or even in surrounding villages. This learning center is a safe meeting place and strengthens education by providing local girls with a computer lab and library books.
